The last song on the shower radio this AM was Sandler's "Hanukkah Song." It was perfect for setting the tone of my first foray into celebrating the festival of lights, albiet a little early for this year. Sherry (yellow sweater) cooked us up a traditional Jewish meal of latkas, gefilte fish with horseradish, matzo balls, pickled herring, some pate I can't remember the name of, challah, homemade apple sauce and brisket. She made sure our bellies were full and that we cleaned our plates. We toasted "Lechiem!" and also learned how to play dreidel. I lost mad chocolate ducats in the game but Dave the engineer was kind enough to lend me a few so I could play on like only a true playa can. In the end we had to have a dreidel off to see who won all of the booty. Alas it was not yours truly. Thanks for the fun and educational meal Sherry. You're the Jewish mom I never had.
Oh, while enjoying the gefilte fish I got to thinking, some chef with a penchant for fusion should whip up some gefilte sushi. I think Yiddish-Asian will be the next big culinary trend - mark my words!
