Jealous Again

Earlier this evening (I guess it's yesterday now) The Swimmers kicked off their February residency at the Khyber in fine form. The Jealous Girlfriends opened up for them and they were quite impressive. TTFN

Swimmers in the Stream

Just in time to make 2006 "Best Of" lists, The Swimmers have decided to stream "Fighting Trees" for your listening pleasure. I'm very proud of this record, even though I had absolutely nothing to do with it. Enjoy it, and remember to buy the disc when it finally comes out this spring.

Late to the game whereas the Sexyback is concerned

I am very late to the game on JT's latest venture known as "Sexyback."
But tonight, I schooled myself. A simple search of "sexyback.mp3" yielded a nice quality file I could download for review purposes. You should maybe do the same.

I've been a believer in Timberlake for a while now (which makes me so much punker than you) and this joint just solidifies his solid rating in my book. He'd make that rating even stronger by adding Mike "Slo-Mo" Brenner to his touring band. I think that union could work really well for all parties involved.

Baby What I Might've Said

Tonight on my way home from work I listened to this story about how a producer "found" an old sub-par recording by Ray Charles in a vault somewhere and got the notion to digitally cut out the old backing music and replace it with the modern day Count Basie Orchestra. The resulting product is called "Ray Sings, Basie Swings."

While I am somewhat enticed by the idea of new and wonderful possibilities for post mortem mash-ups, it just stinks of dollar signs. It's my belief that Starbucks and HearMusic will milk Ray till the last drop. So while I am intrigued by the digital possibilities, it doesn't make me feel all warm and mochaful.

On a fun note, here are some other mash-ups of bands and singers I'd like to see brought to life through the wonders of digital recording technology. Here are the rules: at least one party has to be alive and able to come into the studio and sing or play the songs of the departed. And you can't put words or chords into the mouths or hands of the "enhanced" party. This means that Johnny Cash would not have been able to sing or play the songs of the Arctic Monkeys. He could have done the songs of the Monkeys but that's getting off track. Rules, rules, rules. I've included album names where possible to save the baristas some valuable studio time and get to market sooner with their product...

Roy Orbison + Los Lonely Boys Roy Orbison Sings With The Lonely (this would suck, we'd wish that Pearl Jam would've been asked to do this one.)

nothing here is perfect

My very good friends Movies With Heroes released "Nothing Here Is Perfect" today. It's their biggest, tightest, most ambitious, and best effort yet. I've got much respect for the band because they know how to work it and they deserve an A for tenacity and stick-to-it-iveness for surviving the ups and downs of 10 plus years of trying to make it in the rock game. They exemplify the beautiful struggle. Help a brother's brothers out and listen to them and possibly purchase this finely crafted work of rock. The record is on iTunes as well, so you don't even have to step outside into the dark night to find out what the kids with their hearts on their sleeves are listening to these days on their walkmen boom boxers.
UPDATE: I just got wind that the MWH CD is going to be available in Hot Topic stores. This story keeps getting better.
